This album came together in a period of transition. Wracked by the tyranny of cacophony and emotionally exhausted by the then-physical nature of my live shows, I needed a clean break. I focused on slower, more intentional improvisation that could be worked into larger wholes, electroacoustic drones drawn from cheap guitars, contact mics, and scrap reverb tanks, and unknown shrieks from tapes of uncertain provenance. I’d rework them in my spare room, on my couch, or on the front porch, clipping fragments together on my headphones, as I passed sheets through a second-hand copier again and again. If nothing else, it at least felt different from the way I’d been operating, a self-granted carte blanche to try something else in how I chose to record and create artwork for the albums, and to own my creative process. This is a reminder of that time.
