This album reflects an evolution in how I sustain my creative life. It is both documentation of my experience of chronic illness as well as a love letter to those who have tended to me as I’ve developed these compositions. In my other recent work, I focus on the immediacy of sensory experience. With Ongoingnesses, I explore a different sense of what McKenzie Wark calls ongoingness, or, in her words, “wanting the story to have another season.” The stories here are what it’s taken for me to keep going: tracking symptoms and making them intelligible to those who care about you, and the joy of making someone laugh who’s cooking dinner for your household. These relationships and their caregiving allow for these ongoingnesses: for me and my stories to have another season, without them demanding futurity, U-Hauling, or normative forms of domesticity.
Thank you to everyone who made this possible: Max Alper, Casey Anderson, Nicole Alonso, the Argyle Pile (Maeve Andrews, Chris Gleason, Erin Watson, Paprika, Charnushka, and Basil), Madeleine Burkholder, Aaron Michael Butler, Jefrey Hall, Sarah Hennies, Jesse Roth, Josh Faber-Hammond and Tatiana Muzica of Otolithia, J. Soliday, and the Woo Family (Forest, Kara, Tamsin, Nikita, Hecate, Gnocchi, and all household members past and present).
